James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Woodland Hills Owner’s Guide

If you have a bathroom with James Hardie siding, trim, or backer board and the moisture barrier has failed, the fix in Woodland Hills typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on how far the damage has traveled behind the walls. We stock James Hardie-compatible backer board, trim, and flashing on our trucks, and we can usually have a crew out for an assessment within a day or two of your call to (831) 290-6866. Most homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a soft spot near the tub, paint peeling at the baseboard, or a musty smell that won’t quit even after the fan runs all night.

Call (831) 290-6866

Here’s the thing about bathrooms in this part of the San Fernando Valley. We get long dry stretches that lull people into thinking water isn’t doing anything. Then a wet winter hits, or a pipe weeps behind a wall for months, and whatever was quietly degrading finally shows itself. By the time you see it, the repair is usually a remodel, not a patch.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

A walk-in shower with large-format tile and a built-in niche

James Hardie makes three product families that matter in a bathroom remodel, and they fail differently. HardieBacker cement board (the 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch sheets) goes behind tile in showers and around tubs. HardiePanel siding sometimes wraps the exterior wall behind a bathroom, especially on additions and second-story bump-outs. HardieTrim boards run around windows and outside corners, and when they wick moisture at the cut ends, the damage tracks inward toward the bathroom.

The compatibility gotcha with HardieBacker is this: the 1/4-inch sheet is for floors and countertops only. It is not rated for walls, and we’ve pulled it off shower walls in Woodland Hills more times than we can count. Walls need the 1/2-inch version for stiffness, and the seams need alkali-resistant mesh tape bedded in thinset, not drywall tape. If someone built your shower with the wrong board or the wrong tape, the tile job can look fine for years while the substrate rots behind it.

Mason Remodeling Co Woodland Hills is an independent contractor, not affiliated with James Hardie. We install their products because they hold up in our climate when installed to spec, and because homeowners ask for them by name. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for vanities, counters, and surrounds, so one call covers the entire bathroom.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout keeps cracking along the shower floor or the tub line. Movement behind the tile means the backer board has flexed, usually from moisture swelling or a floor joist that was never right. Cracked grout is a symptom, not a standalone fix.
  • Baseboard near the tub or shower is swelling, discolored, or soft to the touch. Water is escaping the waterproofing layer and wicking into the framing. By the time the baseboard shows it, the bottom plate of the wall is often involved.
  • Paint on the bathroom side of an exterior wall is bubbling or flaking in a localized area. That usually traces to HardieTrim or HardiePanel outside not shedding water properly, or missing flashing at a window or vent penetration.
  • A musty smell that persists after cleaning, or a sudden jump in indoor humidity near the bathroom. Mold inside a wall cavity doesn’t always show itself for months. If your nose says there’s a problem, trust it.
  • Tile sounds hollow when tapped, or a tile pops off with thinset stuck to it. This means the bond between tile and backer board has failed, often because the board was installed wet or thinset was mixed too dry and skimmed over. Water did the rest.

If you’re seeing any of these, don’t wait. In Woodland Hills, we get enough heat that a moist wall cavity becomes a mold incubator fast. The longer it sits, the more the price climbs.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower

A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in Woodland Hills runs $9,000 to $28,000, and where you land depends on four things: how much framing has to come out, whether the shower pan or tub gets replaced, what finishes you choose, and whether we’re moving plumbing or keeping the existing layout. A guest bath with a tub surround and basic finishes starts around $9,000. A primary bath with a walk-in shower, new vanity, and tile to the ceiling can hit $28,000 without trying hard.

Every price we give is written before work starts. You’ll see the line items: demolition and disposal, framing repair, HardieBacker and waterproofing, tile and setting materials, fixtures, trim, and finish work. No verbal estimate that grows on the final bill. No change orders unless you ask for a change. Our work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t right within 365 days of the completion date, we come back and make it right at no cost to you.

What Drives the Price in Woodland Hills

  • Framing damage. If water has been at work for years, sill plates and studs come out and get replaced. That’s labor and lumber and it’s where most “surprises” live, which is why we open the wall before we finalize a number.
  • Shower system. A fiberglass tub surround replacement is the low end. A tiled walk-in with a curbless entry and linear drain is the high end. Most Woodland Hills homes fall in the middle: a tiled tub surround with a niche or two.
  • Permits and inspections. We pull permits when the scope requires them, and we pass inspections before the final walkthrough. That’s included in the written price, not added later.
  • Finish materials. Tile runs $3 to $30 per square foot depending on what you pick, and fixtures from Moen to Toto land at very different price points. You pick; we price it straight.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check a few things yourself. Pull the shower head and look at the pipe stub for moisture or mineral deposits. Run your hand along the baseboard and the bottom edge of the drywall for soft spots. Look at the exterior wall from outside: is the HardieTrim caulked at the joints, and does water bead on the paint or soak in? These are diagnostic, and they tell you whether to call.

What you should not do is cut into a bathroom wall to “take a look.” Bathrooms pack plumbing, electrical, and sometimes gas lines into tight cavities, and an exploratory cut can hit a water line or a wire. Even if you find the rot, pulling out rotted backer board without addressing the source of the moisture just buys you a repeat failure in two years. We’ve fixed enough of those in Woodland Hills to say it plainly: the second repair always costs more than the first one done right. Call (831) 290-6866 and we’ll send someone who knows exactly what to look for.
